Kathmandu. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to take serious measures to address problems identified in prisons across the country.
In a press statement issued today, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel highlighted that security challenges have worsened following prisoner escapes and looted weapons from the police that have yet to be recovered. “The government has been instructed to implement serious measures to resolve the security challenges that arose after the Gen Z Uprising,” the statement noted.
The NHRC also pointed out a budget shortfall for the reconstruction of physical structures damaged during the uprising, as well as for essential materials for detainees. The commission stressed that these issues must be addressed promptly to ensure the safety and rights of prisoners.
Following the November 13-14 Gen Z Uprising, the constitutional body carried out monitoring of prisons within the Kathmandu Valley, and has now extended its oversight to detention centers outside the Valley through its provincial offices.
The NHRC emphasized that addressing these problems is crucial for maintaining human rights standards and security within the prison system.
