Overview & Significance

  • The Shree Shailya Shikhar Malikarjun Temple is a Hindu temple in Malikarjun Rural Municipality, Darchula District, Sudurpashchim Province.

  • Deities worshipped are Lord Shiva (“Arjun” part) and Goddess Parvati (“Malika” part). So “Malika = Parvati” and “Arjun = Shiva.”

  • The temple and the surrounding area (Shailyashikhar Dham) are considered sacred pilgrimage sites. In 2065 BS (Bikram Sambat), the Government of Nepal declared it the 7th “Dham” / sanctuary of the country.

Location & Altitude

  • The temple lies about 46 km from Khalanga (the district headquarters of Darchula) in Malikarjun VDC / Rural Municipality.  It is situated at an altitude of around 3,200 meters above sea level (for the temple area) Agent Akash

  • There is also a peak or summit called Shailyashikhar associated with the temple, which is higher.

Festivals & Rituals

  • Major festivals when many devotees visit:

    • Ashadh (Asar) Shukla Chaturdashi

    • Kartik (Kartik Shukla Trayodashi / Chaturdashi)

    • Gaura Festival in Bhadra is also celebrated annually.

  • During these festivals, special puja, jatra (fair / procession), and pilgrimages take place. The temple becomes very crowded, with many people making the journey on foot.

How to Get There

  • From Khalanga (Darchula HQ): Travel by road as far as possible; then local trails or paths lead up to the temple area.

  • There is mention of the Shailya Shikhar peak (Dham), which is about 5 km from the temple “mud” (road head) area.

  • During festivals, many devotees make the journey on foot from nearby villages or roadheads. The terrain is mountainous, so expect uphill treks, potentially for several hours depending on starting point.

What to Expect & Tips

  • The temple is in a remote, mountainous region, so infrastructure (roads, lodgings) near the temple are likely basic. Plan accordingly.

  • Because of high altitude and steep terrain, weather conditions can change; bring warm clothing, appropriate footwear, and gear.

  • Festivals attract lots of people — local security measures are often increased during the Jatra.

  • Respect local customs: certain rites, prohibited items, dress codes may apply. For example, some rituals & access to summit areas (Shailyashikhar Dham) might have restrictions.
