Kathmandu. Five-star luxury property Taragaon Regency Hotels Ltd. (Hyatt Regency Kathmandu) has announced that the hotel will resume operations after completing its reconstruction, following the extensive damage it suffered during the recent Gen-Z Movement.
In a statement released on Sunday, Executive Director Suresh Lal Shrestha expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Finance Minister Rameshwar Prasad Khanal for assuring government support in the hotel’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.
The statement said that the damages incurred during the protests of September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23 and 24) are currently being assessed. The hotel reaffirmed its commitment to relaunch operations with enhanced facilities and world-class services, strengthening Nepal’s reputation in the global tourism industry.
“The vandalism, looting, and arson that occurred during the protests caused severe damage to guest rooms, offices, reception areas, the lobby, restaurants, banquet halls, and even the Chaitya within the hotel premises,” the statement said. “Since then, the hotel has remained completely closed. After a full damage assessment, we plan to undertake comprehensive upgradation and reconstruction, and reopen at the earliest with even better facilities.”
According to the management, the reconstruction and upgrading process is expected to take at least one year.
Hyatt Regency further stated that it remains committed to contributing to Nepal’s economy by boosting government revenue and enhancing the nation’s global standing as a premier tourist destination.
“The hotel has witnessed Nepal’s major political and social transformations over the past two and a half decades,” the statement continued. “Throughout this time, we have endured the armed conflict, peace process, constitution drafting, the earthquake, and the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to provide thousands of jobs and contributing significantly to Nepal’s tourism and economy.”
The statement also highlighted that Hyatt Regency Kathmandu has been repeatedly recognized by the government for its role in tourism and economic contribution. It has received the award for highest taxpayer in the tourism sector seven times, and has been honored twice as the top foreign exchange earner in the hospitality industry.
