Hyatt Regency Kathmandu Closes Indefinitely After Gen-Z Movement Unrest; Unions Decry Unilateral Decision

Kathmandu: The Hyatt Regency Hotel has been closed indefinitely, citing damage caused during the recent “Gen-Z Movement” protests that led to vandalism and arson. The hotel management stated that operations would remain suspended until further notice, and no decision has been made regarding when or whether the property will reopen after repairs. The government has also shown concern over the closure.

In a public notice, Mohammad Yusuf Yani, the hotel’s Director of Human Resources, announced that the decision was made due to the risks involved in repair and reconstruction work and the sensitive security environment following the protests.

The notice further instructed hotel employees not to report to work until a new announcement is issued, following consultations with the hotel’s active trade unions. However, union leaders expressed surprise and disappointment, saying that management unilaterally issued the closure notice while discussions were still ongoing.
Long-serving employees and union representatives said the sudden shutdown was unjust and accused the management of exploiting the situation to undermine workers’ rights. They noted that the dispute over employee benefits and working conditions had already reached the courts, and this decision was taken despite ongoing legal proceedings.
Some workers and union leaders, who spoke to Nepal Press on condition of anonymity, said they feared retaliation under hotel employment rules that allow for dismissal for sharing internal information. They insisted that no mutual agreement had been reached to close the hotel or halt work as stated in the management’s notice.

One union leader said, “Talks were being held in the presence of the management, worker representatives, and the DSP of Boudha. We clearly opposed the idea of closing the hotel or sending employees home. After continuous pressure, another notice was issued on Kartik 2 (October 18) evening.”

The second notice stated: “On this day, Kartik 2, 2082, discussions were held between the establishment and representatives of the active trade unions regarding the concerns raised by workers. Both parties have agreed to continue the dialogue after Tihar.”
