Lalitpur, Nepal. In a significant milestone for Nepal’s healthcare sector, a successful pediatric liver transplant has been performed on a 5-year-old girl at a private hospital for the first time in the country.
The procedure was carried out by the KIST Transplant Centre at KIST Teaching Hospital, marking an important step forward in the development of pediatric liver transplant services in Nepal.
The girl, who had developed a severe condition due to Wilson’s disease, was referred to KIST Teaching Hospital for treatment. Her health was reportedly critical before the transplant. After nearly a month of multidisciplinary care, intensive treatment and continuous monitoring, her condition was stabilized and she was prepared for the transplant.
On Bhadra 2, 2083 B.S., the girl’s 33-year-old mother donated a portion of her liver to her daughter. The living-donor liver transplant between the mother and daughter was successfully completed.
Pediatric liver transplantation is considered a highly complex and challenging medical procedure. It requires experienced transplant surgeons, hepatologists, anesthesiologists, pediatric specialists, critical care teams and advanced medical infrastructure.
The multidisciplinary team at KIST Transplant Centre successfully coordinated these specialized services to complete the complex procedure.
Following this achievement, KIST Transplant Centre has also announced plans to expand its services as a Pediatric Centre, providing multidisciplinary healthcare services for children in the coming days.
The mother’s selfless decision, the dedication of the medical team and the availability of advanced medical care have together given the 5-year-old girl a new opportunity at life. The achievement is expected to be an important milestone not only for KIST Transplant Centre but also for the advancement of pediatric liver transplantation services in Nepal.
