Rs 638 Million Revenue Collected from Spring Mountaineering Expeditions

Phungling (Taplejung). The number of mountain climbers in Nepal has seen a steady rise in recent years, with the spring climbing season generating significant revenue for the country. According to the Department of Tourism, a total of Rs 638 million in revenue was collected from mountaineering expeditions across various peaks between March 1 and April 21 of the current fiscal year.

During this period, 41 climbers—26 men and 15 women—successfully scaled Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,556m), the world’s third-highest peak located in Taplejung, contributing Rs 10.97 million in royalty fees. Similarly, 66 climbers reached the summit of Mt. Makalu in Sankhuwasabha, generating Rs 16.26 million in revenue.

The world’s highest peak, Mt. Sagarmatha (Everest), remained the most popular, with 374 climbers (302 men and 72 women) reaching its summit, resulting in revenue of Rs 554 million during the season.

Altogether, 869 mountaineers (678 men and 191 women), including Nepali and foreign nationals, successfully climbed 23 mountains and peaks during the spring season, contributing to the remarkable Rs 638 million revenue, according to the Department.
