Bansdol in Banepa Municipality–12, Kavrepalanchok, has recently gained popularity as a new tourist destination. Far from the noise, smoke, and pollution of the marketplace, the area has become a favorite spot for visitors seeking peace and natural beauty.
Many visitors, particularly youths, are drawn to Janatidhunga not only to enjoy the greenery but also to create TikTok videos. Bikash Yadav, originally from Biratnagar and currently studying in Baneshwor, Kathmandu, said he decided to visit after seeing videos online. “The scenery here is even more beautiful and enjoyable than what I saw on TikTok. That’s why I planned my college break to come here,” he shared.
Local resident Ganesh Tamang, who hiked from Banepa to Janatidhunga, expressed similar excitement. “You can’t capture everything in a video. Climbing up the hills, feeling the fresh air, and enjoying the panoramic views make the experience truly special,” he said.
According to Shambhu Kunwar, another local resident, Janatidhunga is not only geographically attractive but also holds religious significance. Legend has it that Lord Bethanchok Narayan promised to marry Panchakanya Devi at the site but failed to fulfill the vow. As a result, the groom and all the wedding guests were turned into stones (shila), giving the place its name, Janatidhunga (meaning “Stone of the Wedding Procession”).
To make the site more accessible, stairs have been built to view the rows of stones on the cliff. The ward office has also planned to construct a statue of Lord Buddha and additional stairways leading to the flat hilltop above Janatidhunga.
With the growing flow of visitors, local residents have started small businesses to earn income. Devimaya Khatri from Khatri Gaun, Panauti-4, said she now earns between NPR 1,500 and 5,000 daily by operating a small shop.
Janatidhunga can be reached by traveling about nine kilometers from Banepa via Jangal, Bhainsepati, Bansdol, and Budhaganesh Temple. Alternatively, visitors can also reach the site from Panauti Bus Park through Chamkhar.
