Begnas Lake (Begnas Tal) — Pokhara’s Tranquil Gem
Location: Lekhnath area, 15 km east of Pokhara city, Kaski District, Gandaki Province
Elevation: ~650 meters above sea level
Area: Approximately 3.3 sq. km
Type: Freshwater lake — the third-largest in Nepal
Overview
Begnas Lake (Begnas Tal) is one of Pokhara Valley’s most beautiful yet peaceful lakes—often described as the “quiet sister of Phewa Lake.”
Surrounded by lush green hills, terraced farmlands, and reflections of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, Begnas offers a serene escape from Pokhara’s busy Lakeside.
Unlike Phewa, which buzzes with boats and cafés, Begnas is less commercialized, giving visitors a chance to connect with nature and local village life.
Natural Beauty & Setting
-
Panoramic mountain reflections: On clear days, the calm waters mirror peaks like Machhapuchhre and Annapurna II.
-
Terraced rice fields: The lake’s eastern shore is lined with traditional Gurung and Magar villages, adding a rustic charm.
-
Biodiversity: The lake and nearby forests host various fish species, birds, and wetland plants.
Begnas is also part of the Rupa–Begnas watershed system, which maintains ecological balance and provides livelihood to locals.
