Kathmandu: A cycling campaign titled “Tour de Lumbini: Pedal for Peace 2026,” aimed at spreading the message of peace, has officially begun today from Kathmandu to Lumbini. The journey was flagged off from Anandakuti School near Swayambhu in the capital.
In the initial phase, 60 cyclists are participating, with organizers expecting the number to reach 108 by the time the group arrives in Lumbini. Participants include youth, cyclists, corporate representatives, and media personnel from Nepal as well as other countries.
At the farewell ceremony, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Nepal Ruwanthi Delpitiya, along with Buddhist monks Maitri Mahasthabir, Dharmamurti Mahasthabir, and Pannamurti Mahasthabir, extended their best wishes and wished for the success of the journey.
According to campaign founder Megh Ale, the initiative, which has been running since 2012, has consistently promoted messages of peace, coexistence, and positive social change. This year’s campaign is being led by renowned global cyclist Pushkar Shah.
The main objective of the campaign is to spread the message of peace worldwide from Lumbini, widely regarded as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. Organizers also aim to position Nepal as an international hub for peace.
This year’s edition places special emphasis on active youth participation, encouraging young people to combine physical endurance with social responsibility in the digital age. The campaign will also engage local communities along different stages of the journey to promote a sustainable, transparent, and peaceful society.
Campaign coordinator Rajesh Dhakhwa stated that amid rising global tensions, particularly events like the Russia–Ukraine War, the importance of such peace initiatives has grown significantly. He added that the campaign will continue to actively promote messages of peace, coexistence, and global unity through cycling.
