Grande International Hospital Becomes Nepal’s First WSO-Accredited Advanced Stroke Centre

Kathmandu . Grande International Hospital has achieved a historic milestone in Nepal’s healthcare sector by becoming the first hospital in the country to receive the Advanced Stroke Centre Accreditation from the World Stroke Organization (WSO). This recognition, valid from October 17, 2025, to October 16, 2028, places the hospital among a select group of elite healthcare institutions worldwide that meet the WSO’s rigorous standards for excellence in stroke care.

The accreditation recognizes Grande International Hospital’s adherence to evidence-based, globally informed protocols for stroke management and its outstanding patient outcomes. The hospital’s achievement marks a major advancement in Nepal’s neurological healthcare capabilities.

“This accreditation represents our unwavering commitment to providing world-class stroke care to the people of Nepal,” said Dr. Raju Paudel, Consultant Neurologist and Director of the Stroke Programme at Grande International Hospital. “Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability globally, and in Nepal, every ten minutes one person suffers from a stroke. This recognition validates our team’s dedication to delivering rapid, comprehensive, and evidence-based treatment that can save lives and improve outcomes.”

The Advanced Stroke Centre designation highlights that Grande International Hospital offers a full range of specialized services, including:

  • 24/7 access to specialized stroke care teams (neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, intensivists, emergency and ICU stroke nurses, therapists, pharmacists, and emergency medical service teams)
  • Advanced neuroimaging and diagnostic capabilities
  • Rapid administration of time-sensitive treatments such as thrombolytics and thrombectomy
  • Evidence-based protocols for acute stroke management
  • Comprehensive rehabilitation and continuous quality monitoring through the ResQ registry

The accreditation process involved a detailed evaluation of the hospital’s infrastructure, clinical protocols, and adherence to international best practices. The assessment team included experts from the World Stroke Organization, led by Associate Prof. Dr. Dierdre De Silva, Secretary of WSO and Consultant Neurologist at the National Neuroscience Institute Singapore, and Ms. Rupal Sedani, Global Certification Lead of WSO. The certification was formally awarded by WSO President Dr. Jeyaraj D. Pandian, Immediate Past President Dr. Sheila Martins, and Treasurer Dr. Valeria Caso.

“Every minute counts when treating stroke patients,” said Dr. Subash Phuyal, Neurointervention Radiologist at Grande Hospital. “This accreditation ensures that patients in Nepal can now access internationally recognized stroke care standards locally, eliminating the need for treatment abroad. Timely interventions such as thrombectomy in large vessel occlusion can mean the difference between recovery and permanent disability. We are also performing advanced procedures like coiling for aneurysms, carotid stenting, and flow diverter treatments for complex aneurysms.”

Dr. Binod Bijukchhe, Hospital Director, added: “Grande International Hospital remains committed to advancing neurological care in Nepal and upholding the highest international standards for stroke treatment and patient care. I congratulate our entire stroke team for their dedication and excellence in achieving this world-class recognition.”
This accreditation establishes Grande International Hospital as a leader in advanced stroke care in Nepal and a benchmark for global healthcare excellence.
